CCK Nodereference Screencast

CCK's Node reference is becoming a popular technique for publising sites. Two sites of note are the New York Observer and the Rake Magazine. Both sites featured in nice write-ups on Drupal.org (linked above). Both mention the use of node reference, yet there are a few tricks to getting node reference to work. We''ll cover those tricks in this screencast.

Thanks for this, it was really helpful!

This is not only a CCK node reference, but also an excellent and quick screencast for CCK node theming. My journey into PHP programming has started through Drupal, and this screencast brought me a step closer.

I wanted to view your video because i am using noderefs a lot. Unfortunately my firefox 2.0.0.11 on linux crashes every time I click on the download link. "play" doesn't work either, cause I have no quicktime.
Is there kind of a flash (flv) version or a direkt link?

You might try downloading and viewing in Video Lan Client or Mplayer which are available for Linux

if it doesn't work I can post an mpeg 4 version

Thanks, it worked well with mplayer for Linux.
I am going to watch more of your drupal videos now - it's a great time saver compared to reading drupal.org books!
Hope you get payed for that :-)

I enjoy making them and I appreciate your thanks. Payment enough

What mplayer wont play vlc will do the job.

Great great great screencast!

Very useful & interesting screencast!
I 've been looking for displayong the image from the original node to the "supernode" page, unfortunately, i didn't succeed!
If anybody has a clue...

Great job! This kind of work makes Drupal documentation even better!

It would be great to discuss about how to cache this data. I am working in a project with a lot of blocks and cck fields together. When I reach the performance tests phase, I will annotate all the results and try to post some related info.

If you turn on the page cache at admin -> site configuration -> performance. Set the cache interval o say 30 or 60 minutes, then your nodereference page gets cached for 30 or 60 minutes.

This is such a fantastic screencast! I feel I've learned a lot although steps were really simple and logical, this module works exactly as I imagined and what a fantastic module it is. Thanks so much for this screencast man you rock! I'm working on a large site and I will be using this technique along with maybe the editions technique from the New York Observer site. I'll definitely come back and post a message with the link when its ready! Again Geoff this is a brilliant service you are providing to the Drupal community, I'll start spreading the word about these screencasts, so keep them coming, cause we love them! By the way I just saw you Captcha and it looks beautiful, what module did you use to get the nicely styled characters?

This Rocks, my feeble little mind was able to follow your awesome instructions. You have now made me hungry for more! More, I say MORE!! With all the great content out there, you have been able to give me exactly what I have been looking fore.

Seriously I need more... :)

Your screencast has answered several of my basic questions. Drupal's functions are so easy, if there's someone who shows you how to use them. Thanks a lot for doing so!

First, this technique is awesome. Thanks.

I was wondering if there is a way to use this technique to insert already themed nodes. I'd like to use it, but the superpage needs to display nodes that are already themed instead of themeing them in the superpage as you have done here.

This was an excellent explanation of Node Reference. One thing I was wondering, is there a way to filter the superfield dropdowns. I can imagine a news site having hundreds of stories. Or would I need to build a View to do the filtering?
Thanks

the player isn't loading for me :(

i'm using firefox 3.5.x with flash player v10 on a mac
safari & chrome kind of load the player, but there are no controls...
